Make the Label Count campaign says system due to come into force in 2023 is misleading and outdatedNew eco-labels for fabrics being introduced in the EU are not strict enough, campaigners say. From 2023 all clothes and shoes sold in the EU will include colour-coded labels informing customers about the products’ environmental impact. But the Make the Label Count campaign, launched this week, says the system of measurement developed in 2013 is misleading, outdated and not in line with the EU’s climate goals. Continue reading...

2021-10-14 14:20:19 Looking for the finest French restaurants? Go to London, not Paris | Jay Rayner

Not only that, but the Italian restaurants are better than Rome’s. Really, why bother going abroad? It was while I was scarfing down the blistered flat bread, laid with lardons, snails and shiny jewels of bone marrow at Maison François, that the thought came to me. It was while I was forking away their mustardy celeriac remoulade, with huge, crunchy caper berries on the side, that the thought hardened. It felt subversive and dangerous; the sort of thing that can get you bawled out by electronic baying mobs if you give it voice. And yet I held the thought to be demonstrably true. Baying mobs be damned. It should be said. So here goes: it’s easier to find terrific French food in London than it is in Paris.Maison François in St James’s, which does a fabulous line in leeks vinaigrette and has a killer dessert trolley complete with a perfect paris-brest, is only part of the story. There’s the glorious Brasserie Zédel with its steak haché and choucroute. There’s the achingly indulgent Otto’s with its old-school lobster soufflé, steak tartare and canard à la presse. There’s Pique Nique and L’Escargot and Mon Plaisir. The list goes on. Continue reading...

2021-10-14 14:20:14 Blondie’s 20 greatest songs – ranked!

As they reissue their 1981 festive EP Yuletide Throwdown, we rate the best of the New York band who strutted through punk, disco and pop with absolute coolWhen it came to picking cover versions, you couldn’t fault Chris Stein and Debbie Harry’s taste, hence this slickly appealing take on the Paragons’ John Holt-penned 1967 single. Extra points for the video, which involves Darth Vader, a flooded apartment and a dancer unaccountably dressed as Pan – it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Continue reading...

2021-10-14 14:00:19 The Iceland goalkeeper who swapped football for the London Film Festival

Hannes Halldorsson helped Iceland beat England at Euro 2016. Now he is in London to release Cop Secret, his first feature filmBy Chris Evans for The Set PiecesIt’s a storyline that would not look out of place on the big screen. The down-on-his-luck goalkeeper who could not play the sport he loves during his younger years due to persistent injuries suddenly finds himself going head-to-head with a global icon. But when Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson clapped his gloves together in preparation to face a penalty from Lionel Messi, this was not a plot dreamed up by a bigwig director. It was the 2018 World Cup and most definitely real life.Messi’s penalty was at the perfect height for Halldorsson, who dived to his right and parried the shot away to safety. Messi had been vanquished. “My story – going from a lower-league goalkeeper in Iceland to saving a penalty against the best football player in the world – sounds like something from a bad cliché Hollywood sports movie,” says Halldorsson. “I’m probably not going to make that one myself.” Continue reading...

2021-10-14 14:00:15 Boris Johnson’s holiday villa linked to offshore tax havens, documents suggest

Marbella villa was lent to prime minister by Zac GoldsmithWith its two swimming pools, organic farm and private woodland, it may have seemed the ideal place to escape for a prime minister hoping to get away from it all.But the sprawling Marbella estate where Boris Johnson has been staying this week may be an awkward reminder of the questions he faced – and managed to avoid – in the wake of the Pandora papers revelations last week. 2021-10-14 13:40:18 Merck wants Americans to pay $712 for a Covid drug that taxpayers helped develop | David Sirota

The drug in question only costs $17.74 to produce. Unfortunately, this type of behaviour is widespread in US pharmaLast week, we learned that Merck is planning to charge Americans 40 times its cost for a Covid drug whose development was subsidized by the American government. The situation spotlights two sets of facts that have also gone largely unmentioned in the legislative debate over whether to let Medicare negotiate for lower drug prices.Fact one: Americans are facing not merely expensive drugs, but prices that are examples of outright profiteering.
