A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched classified National Reconnaissance Office satellites into orbit Sunday from Space Force Base Vandenberg, Calif.
The first-stage rocket took off south, before turning around two and a half minutes later and falling back to Earth.
SpaceX did not provide any details about the mission, other than confirming that the second stage reached orbit as planned.
NRO did not release any information about the satellite's payload, but confirmed the success of the mission in its statement.
Analysts suggested that the rocket carried two Naval Ocean Surveillance System satellites, which electronically track and detect ships at sea.
