1553: Under the direction of Cardinal Caraffa, later to be Pope Paul IV, a “rabid” leader of the counter-Reformation, the Talmud was confiscated and publicly burned in Rome. He chose Rosh Hashanah of that year specifically so the Anti-Christs would feel the grief. Talmud burning soon spread across many other parts of Italy.
