One time during one of my holidays, my uncle who lived just down the street; uncle Dayo. He called me and said “Come, I want to teach you something! I want you to be coaching my son in Mathematics and English, I will equally be giving you five Naira every day for that.” My eyes were wide open like a watchman’s torch after hearing that; not because he wants me to coach his son but for the five Naira everyday – ‘what is five Naira? I cannot even buy sachet water with it’ I thought to myself. But it was holiday period and I didn’t have anything concrete doing besides I didn’t know how I was going to tell Uncle Dayo NO. So I accepted the offer with a sheepish smile on my face. And every day after the coaching Uncle Dayo would hand me a five Naira note – I remember always lamenting and feeling belittled walking back home. I couldn’t bring myself to spending the money so I would dump it in a box; and so I did every day.
Something happened one day, I wanted to buy something for myself; the kind of thing you don’t tell your parents to give you money for but you use your personal money (so nobody will disturb you with questions). Anyway, after sucking every loop and corner dry, my money was still not complete. The window of opportunity of me getting what I wanted was gradually closing and nothing was forth coming then I remembered my box of five Naira - it was about 6 months old. As I opened the box, the notes burst open filling a large portion of my room. How much is it? [Let us do the maths…]

Five Naira for 1 day, in 20 days that is one hundred Naira
In another 10 days, that is fifty Naira.
Altogether, in a month we have one hundred and fifty Naira.
Now, in 6 months, that is nine hundred Naira….. What?
That was more than what I needed to complete the money at hand! That day, the five Naira that was worth nothing was what accumulated to save the day.
1%! What is 1% of a hundred Naira? Just one Naira; totally insignificant. But 100 1% gives you 100% which now is significant and powerful – Imagine making a profit of 100%? Totally awesome, right? The same thing with our lives, many at times we are bothered with how we can climb the ladder of success, how we can build that business, company, establish that dream of ours – and it all seem difficult. Well, I have a solution; I have a model you can adopt and it is the 1% model.
Every day of your life, ensure you are 1% better than you were yesterday – increase your ability by just 1% every day, add to your knowledge just 1%. You don’t have to neither do you need to do much, just 1% every day – that insignificant 1%.
Ensure that no day passes without you being 1% better. I know it is insignificant but do you know that 1% every day in a year will give you 365% and a compound of 3800%? That is about 38 times better than you were last year! Just 1%. It doesn’t just happen, you have to be committed to the process - a little stone today, a little stone tomorrow in the long run will result into a rock. Just 1% a day.
I am sure uncle Dayo never intended teaching me anything, it was just his scope for getting me to coach his son but I learnt something from it anyway.
