Government-imposed INTERNET SHUTDOWNS: Over 750 blackouts documented globally in last 5-years (Report)
Govt’s worldwide have INTENTIONALLY shut down the internet on at least 850 occasions in the last decade – a staggering 90% taking place in the last 5-years, according to a report by Access Now & Jigsaw released Wednesday.
The report traces the spate of internet shutdowns back to the 5-day shutdown in Egypt in 2011 – the action sparked condemnation from some Western countries at the time, the authors write, but the number of blackouts has expanded since then.
According to a lawyer representing Access Now, the worrying trend is due to “more people are getting online and getting access to the internet,” adding: “governments see this as a threat, they start thinking the internet is something they need to control.”
