Astronauts living on Red Planet could extract O2 from water with new device:
Scientists have developed a technology which allows them to withdraw oxygen from extremely salty waters, paving the way for a smoother transaction for humans living on Mars.
The small device is an electrolyzer but allows the system to function without the need for heating or purifying the water source.
"Having demonstrated these electrolyzers under demanding Martian conditions, we intend to also deploy them under much milder conditions on Earth to utilise brackish or salt water feeds to produce hydrogen and oxygen, for example through seawater electrolysis".

Old Human Cells Rejuvenated With Stem Cell Technology:
Old human cells return to a more youthful and vigorous state after being induced to briefly express a panel of proteins involved in embryonic development.
The study found that inducing old human cells in a lab dish to briefly express these proteins rewinds many of the molecular hallmarks of aging and renders the treated cells nearly indistinguishable from their younger counterparts.
"We've wondered for some time if it might be possible to simply rewind the aging clock without inducing pluripotency. Now we've found that, by tightly controlling the duration of the exposure to these protein factors, we can promote rejuvenation in multiple human cell types".

Scientists can now edit multiple genome fragments at a time:
Toronto scientists have developed a more powerful genome editing method to allow editing of multiple genes at a time.
Scientists can now edit multiple sites in the genome at the same time to learn how different DNA stretches co-operate in health and disease.
Unlike the CRISPR-Cas9 technology, CHyMErA combines two different DNA-cutting enzymes, Cas9 and Cas12a, to allow more versatile applications.
"Once we identify exons that have a critical role in disease, we can use this information to develop new therapies".

The Conditions on Mars May Have Once Been Hospitable to RNA:
The prospects of ancient life forming on Mars just got a little more likely. Scientists have determined that in the planet's distant past, conditions could have been just right for the formation of RNA molecules.
If that was the case, life could have formed on Mars consistent with the RNA World hypothesis, the idea that RNA predates the DNA in which our genetic information is predominantly stored today, a step in the complex evolutionary process.
The research has been uploaded to the pre-print server bioRxiv and is yet to be peer-reviewed, but it's an exciting step forward in our understanding of potential (or past) life on the Red Planet.

New Paper Suggests Life Could Be Common Across The Universe:
The building blocks of life can, and did, spontaneously assemble under the right conditions. That's called spontaneous generation, or abiogenesis.
The study relies heavily on a couple of concepts. The first is the vast age and size of the Universe, how it's inflated over time, and how likely events are to occur. The second is RNA; specifically, how long a chain of nucleotides needs to be in order to "expect a self-replicating activity" as the paper says.
When cosmologists add up the number of stars in the observable Universe with the number of stars in the unobservable Universe, the resulting number is 10^100 Sun-like stars. That means there is much more matter in play, and the abiogenic creation of long enough chains of RNA is not only possible, but probable, or even inevitable.

Scientists Just Proved These Two Brain Networks Are Key to Consciousness:
A team from the University of Michigan found that the default mode network (DMN) and the dorsal attention network (DAT) are anti-correlated, meaning that when one is active, the other is suppressed. The team also found that neither network was highly active in people who were unconscious.
These findings suggest that the interplay of the DMN and the DAT support consciousness by allowing us to interact with our surroundings then to quickly internalize those interactions, essentially turning our experiences into thoughts and memories.
“The results provide novel scientific insight into the neuronal mechanisms of consciousness”.

VoltAero E-Plane Tests out Safran's New Electric Motors:
French electric hybrid company, VoltAero is testing out Safran's new ENGINeUS electric motors on its Cassio e-plane.
It's exciting times for VoltAero, as its Cassio e-plane will come in three versions. The pure electric Cassio will seat four, the light hybrid will seat six, and the full hybrid will seat up to nine.
The pure electric's range is of 200km, the light hybrid can fly 200-600km, and the full hybrid can fly more than 600km.

A proven method to grow human blood vessels:
A team of researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School recently proved the ability to grow human-derived blood vessels in a pig, a novel approach that has the potential for providing unlimited human vessels for transplant purposes. Because these vessels were made with patient-derived skin cells, they are less likely to be rejected by the recipient, helping patients potentially avoid the need for life-long, anti-rejection drugs.
"This could allow us to make organs with human blood vessels that would be less apt to be rejected and could be used in patients in need of a transplant. That's what typically causes rejection, the lining of the blood vessels in the organs".

Study shows CRISPR effectiveness against colitis pathogen:
Research at North Carolina State University shows that the CRISPR-Cas system can be used to effectively target and eliminate specific gut bacteria, in this case Clostridioides difficile, the pathogen that causes colitis (a chronic, degenerative disease of the colon).
"We need to target the precise pathogen without disturbing the rest of the microbiome, and that's what this approach does".
"This was a positive first step in a long process, the results of using phages to deliver CRISPR payloads open up new avenues for other infectious diseases and beyond."
