Shad Thames
This riverside is a unique reminder of London’s colonial past. Back in the days when the land belonged to the Knights of St.John (aka The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, if you prefer the full name) it was transformed to a picturesque riverside with passages over the streets.
The colonial times are literally in every brick here: when Great Britain dominated the trade world, Shad Thames was a luxury hypermarket of its time. Tea, coffee, all kinds of exotic goods were on sale and on display on this street. Nowadays it’s a well-developed area with some local bars and fancy stores. If you’re looking for a place to get away from the Tower Bridge — it is one.
