The principality of Sealand is a virtual state proclaimed in 1967 by a retired British major on an abandoned offshore platform in the North Sea.
In its history, the "virtual" principality has experienced many very real problems and adventures: pirate attacks, a coup d'état, clashes with the British coastguard, a fire and a very official visit from German diplomats.
The Principality has also managed to issue its own stamps and coins, which are objects of interest to collectors, as well as its own passports, which are very popular in the world.
