Chinese engineers have developed a smart finger that can determine what a material is made of. The device uses "triboelectric" sensors to test the ability to gain or lose electrons and determine the roughness of a material without harming the surface.
The mechanism has been tested on hundreds of samples from 12 different materials, including wood, glass, plastic and silicon. Analyzing the data with AI, the smartfinger showed an average accuracy of 96.8% and at least 90% accuracy for all materials.
