A robotic arm that can lift objects of any shape
Developers have created a robot arm so that it replicates the structure of a human limb, while also having a sticky surface. This sticky material is based on the gecko's limbs.
The gecko glue creates a strong fixation by means of microscopic flaps. When in full contact with the surface, these valves create a Van der Waals force, which is a weak intermolecular force resulting from slight differences in the arrangement of electrons on the outside of the molecules.
As a result, the adhesive can provide a strong bond, but it requires little force.
