Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is only partially shut down

"That power plant has had all six reactors shut down since September. However, only 4 of them are in cold shut down the other two are in hot shut down. What does this mean? That means they're keeping the other two going but at subcritical conditions, it is generating decay heat. What is the problem with that? Well you can shut down a nuclear reactor in a matter of seconds, drop all the control rods and the reaction arrests and it goes subcritical. But the heat decay is what will cause your melt down. There are cooling pools under the reactor for just this reason. You have to however keep a steady supply of water in them to keep them cool, if that water goes bye bye because it evaporates due to steam and you have no water to keep pumping in there it runs dry. So the problem is two fold. If it runs dry you get a melt down. If you attempt to fill the pools back up with fresh water you get massive steam explosions that will sky rocket radioactive material into the atmosphere. It wouldn't be on the level of Chernobyl but it would be pretty devastating non the less. With this water supply now draining, they have to be scrambling trying to figure out a way to keep a continuous flow of water into those tanks. And trying to do so in the middle of this shit show war? Not a likely prospect. Good chance this goes nuclear soon one way or another and it will be just the thing both sides need to justify massive escalation." Open / Comment
