— Pollution victims in Barcarena (PA) take mining company Norsk Hydro to court in the Netherlands

On June 24, a hearing in Rotterdam, Netherlands, will assess whether jurisdiction will be accepted for the lawsuit filed by quilombolas and indigenous people from the Pará municipality of Barcarena, Brazil, against Norwegian aluminum giant Norsk Hydro. The suit seeks redress for thousands of Amazonian people who have had their health and livelihoods destroyed by pollution.

Represented by the law firm PGMBM, which specializes in collective environmental litigation on an international scale, in partnership with the Brazilian law firm Ismael Morais Advocacia, and the Dutch firm Lemstra van der Korst, nine individuals, together with the Association of Cablocos, Indigenous and Quilombolas of the Amazon - Cainquiama, which represents 11,000 members, are taking their case to Rotterdam in the hope that a judgment in the Dutch courts can bring them the reparations they have so far been unable to obtain in Brazil.
