Ecuadorian parliamentarians formalize request to debate Lasso's impeachment

The document presented by the group of deputies of the National Assembly of Ecuador, from the Union for Hope caucus, had 47 signatures and formalized, on Friday (24), a request to debate the impeachment of the country's president, Guillermo Lasso.

Ecuador has been experiencing a wave of protests by indigenous groups since June 13. The protesters criticize Lasso's economic policies, such as the granting of mining licenses on indigenous lands, and the country's fuel prices. In addition, they ask for more time for small farmers to pay back bank loans.

In response, last Saturday (18), the Ecuadorian president declared a state of exception in three provinces of the country: Imbabura, Cotopaxi and Pichincha (where the capital Quito is located), regions that registered the largest protests. The measure is valid for 30 days.
