2021-07-14 00:19:17 A mini review of the Frehsman's Advanced English course

I joined the program having zero idea what we'll be doing throughout the month. I just knew it would be tough

I decided not to do a mini review just after the first class but rather attend a little more classes and then evaluate.

Well, first of all, I really like the structure of the seminars and Valera says it's just the way Yale NUS (and any other uni apparently) classes are structured. First, we read the given passage before the class and during the class we discuss the ideas of the passage, our thoughts. What's great is that the content of the course is arranged in a way that we can reflect on it and implement it in our motivational essays. After every reading we've done, we gather insights and figure out the attributes that are applicable for essays.

Plus, we do a lot of writing as a part of our homework. For the very first writing I did I got 67/100. The teacher says the undergraduate level of writing is at 75/100 so I hope it's not that bad as I thought it was.

The only thing is that perhaps I joined the program at wrong time. Perhaps at perfect time, who knows. I mean this is the period when I'm meant to be putting a lot of effort into the SAT. Ofc essays are not less important, but I have only two chances (may be even a single chance) to take the SAT and get the highest (for me) score possible.

2021-07-07 20:23:29 I found the full video of the court where Cameron Herrin was sentenced to a 24-year imprisonment.

I totally agree that if he wasn't that good-looking, he wouldn't go viral and gain so many supporters. But thanks to tons of his "dramatic videos" on Instagram I got to know how courts in America work. I watched the entire video (9.30 hours ) and couple of other explanatory videos dedicating almost 12 hours of my life

I really like the job the prosecutor did (I guess he was prosecutor bc he was speaking on behalf of the state attorney office). Based on his arguments I think he deserved those 24 years in jail considering the minimum case was 18 years extending to 30 years. So 24 is the golden mean.

2021-07-06 13:05:41 Hearing the collocations (?) "Personal brand" and "image making" more and more often. I'm so tired of them.

The thing is that my "personal brand" is so dim + idk what kind of image I should be making out of myself.

Since recently (last 1.5 years ig) I started being interested in variety of things. Like video editing, languages, economics/finances, coding, politics (maybe I forgot smth). So each of them lasted no longer than 3 months. For example, I'm not interested in any of them by now. For that reason, I almost don't have valuable awards and achievements. Plus, they are so not connected to make a clear image of me, and don't really make sense if to look at them from broader perspective.

Well the only ec activity that still holds my interest is music. But dammn since the beginning of high school and all of these "new" stuff there hasn't been any progress (I mean achievements). The main reason is that I graduated from musical school and came to dead-end No more contests, nothing to support this ec with in awards list . I had a big list of them after all. I still hope I can add them to awards list even if they happened 3-4 years ago

Well back to image making, my default position if nothing interesting happens to me in the nearest future is business administration . Again it's not my cup of tea but still an option as it doesn't really require advanced knowledge I guess. But that big "image" of me would in no way show how entrepreneurial I am. And it relates to any major I might choose. Let's say international relations, does it show how really I'm into it, ofc no. I've been thinking I'll do a little more emphasis on music in my application bc it's the only thing where I have more achievements. But isn't it weird that a music girl is choosing comp science ( e.g) with almost no experience in this? I've thought of removing wholly music from the list, and I'll be left with nothing
Struggle.
In the beginning of this journey I really thought I'd handle everything by myself, but now I need at least an advise

2021-07-03 15:00:06 Got to talk with Valera about admission. Managed to ask the question that I've been concerned about lately.

The question was:

Talking specifically about essays, are there strongly set criteria for admission officers to assess us as individuals, our world-perception, personality to infer whether to accept us or not or are they more of subjective morality supporters. Because you know there is a trend among US universities that everyone has to have equal rights in terms of applying for colleges no matter of their beliefs, religion, background and so on.
Let's say in my essay I say smth opposite to what they generally believe in. Are they gonna reject me or understand that everyone has his own values and that different doesn't mean wrong.
For instance, I got rejected from an american program because of (I'm assuming) my kind of provoking essay. I said smth like we should prevent ourselves from showing fake sincerity. And this is opposing view to Americans' one. You know they are always so nice to everyone, they always smile.

The answer was: (not literally)

Yes, you have to know your audience. Just like in Eurovision there are certain songs that work and some that don't. Keep in mind that admissions officers don't want to see 17 year old philosopher. They've seen and know a lot, have their masters. (I think the purpose of these sentences was to say that it's better to not touch philosophy in essays bc it would look like showing off and perhaps the arguments youll make would not be valid or thought-out enough and be banal for the experienced professors). Plus, it's important to leave а good impression. When they think of you, they shouldn't remember you as a confrontational but rather ambitious (e.g) applicant.
