Battle of Dunbar 1650 | United Celts

Battle of Dunbar 1650 Following the establishment of republican rule in England under Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, Scotland declared for King Charles II. Before doing so they made him accept the authority of the Scottish Kirk and the parliament, an offer which Charles was not happy with but nonetheless signed. Upon his arrival in England Scotland began mustering an army to support their King.

The English army hurried north under Lord Fairfax who then resigned, reluctant to attack his old allies, so Cromwell assumed command and crossed the Tweed with his New Model Army. He spent much of August trying to persuade the Scottish army under Lord Leslie of Newark to meet him in open battle but the Scots instead slowly retreated, denying the English supplies and harassing them with cavalry and hostile locals. Cromwell had been supplying his army by sea from the ports of Dunbar and Musselburgh and it was at Dunbar where he was pinned by the Scottish Army. TBC
