In 1968, Gary Crist and his girlfriend Ruth Eisemann kidnapped her for ransom. They placed Barbara in a homemade coffin and, taking the photo below, buried her in the woods.
It took three days to collect the necessary sum of $500,000, awaiting a call from the kidnapper with approximate coordinates, and the subsequent search that followed. Nevertheless, the girl was dug out alive and well.
According to her, the entire time she did not lose faith in her salvation and was singing songs underground.
The kidnappers were later caught and prosecuted. Ruth received seven years, but after four years she was pardoned and exiled to Honduras. Gary received a life sentence, but 10
later he too was released
