In 1968, Gary Crist and his girlfriend Ruth Eisemann kidnapped her for ransom. They placed Barbara in a homemade coffin and, taking the photo below, buried her in the woods.

It took three days to collect the necessary sum of $500,000, awaiting a call from the kidnapper with approximate coordinates, and the subsequent search that followed. Nevertheless, the girl was dug out alive and well.
