Golden Langur

Golden langur, is an Old World monkey found in a small region of western Assam, India and in the neighbouring foothills of the Black Mountains of Bhutan.

The regions of its distribution are very small; the main region is limited to an area bounded on the south by the Brahmaputra River, on the east by the Manas River, on the west by the Sankosh River, all in Assam, India, and on the north by the Black Mountains of Bhutan in a small portion of the northwestern part of Tripura state.

For the most part, the langur is confined to high trees where its long tail serves as a balancer when it leaps across branches.

During the rainy season it obtains water from dew and rain drenched leaves. Its diet is herbivorous, consisting of ripe and unripe fruits, mature and young leaves, seeds, buds and flowers.

The species is listed in Appendix I of CITES & in Schedule I of both, the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 of India, and the Forest and Nature Conservation Act of Bhutan 1995.

RED-EARED SLIDER

IN NEWS

A ‘cute’ American turtle popular as a pet is threatening to invade the natural water bodies across the Northeast, home to 21 of the 29 vulnerable native Indian species of
freshwater turtles and tortoises.

SO HOW ARE THEY A THREAT TO LOCAL POPULATION?

Native to the U.S. and northern Mexico, this turtle is an extremely popular pet due to its small size, easy maintenance, and relatively low cost. But on the flip side, they grow fast and virtually leaves nothing for the native species to eat.

People who keep it as pets become sensitive about turtle conservation but endanger the local ecosystem, probably unknowingly, by releasing them in natural water bodies after they outgrow an aquarium, tank or pool at home.

Although the red-eared slider is traded legally, the time has come for the government to come up with regulations against keeping invasive as pets.

Sea Butterflies

In News

The population of the sea butterflies in the Southern Ocean is shrinking due to climate change, making them extremely vulnerable.

About

Sea butterflies, scientific name Thecosomata, are a suborder of sea snails known as shelled pteropods.

They are found in all oceans but are more diverse and abundant in colder waters.

Sea butterflies have bilateral symmetry and a coiled or uncoiled shell of various shapes and sizes.
Their shell is mostly transparent and very fragile and can be easily dissolved by ocean acidification.

They have a pair of wing-like lobes or parapodia for propulsion and a head with eyes, tentacles, and a mouth with a long proboscis to capture prey.

They are a major food source for many fish, seabirds, whales, and other marine animals.

They also play a key role in transporting carbon from the surface to the deep ocean through their shells and fecal pellets.
