Masjid Mubarak Begum in Old Delhi is also known as 'Randi ki M | UPSC GS1 History Art Culture
Masjid Mubarak Begum in Old Delhi is also known as 'Randi ki Masjid'. While in today's times, that's 'Prostitute's Mosque', the name is a little misleading. In the 19th century, 'Randi' was a term for a refined woman entertainer who rubbed shoulders with the who's who of society.
This mosque honours the memory of Mubarak Begum, a nautch girl who became the wife of a British Major-General, Sir David Ochterlony, in the 19th century.
Mubarak Begum clawed her way to the top but remained haunted by her questionable past. She was despised by the British and the Mughals but loved to bits by her husband, Sir David Ochterlony.
