Several thousand older Shermans, many of them M4A1s, were rema | U.S History

Several thousand older Shermans, many of them M4A1s, were remanufactured in the US and England and upgraded for the European campaign. Applique armor, M34A1 mantlets and other mechanical and technical improvements were made. The M4A1 first saw combat with the British at El Alamein in October of 1942. The American 2nd Armored Division was also equipped with M4A1s in North Africa. A total of 6281 M4A1s were built with the 75mm gun before production ended in December of 1943. They served with most US armored units in the European Theater and Army and Marine Corps units in the Pacific. The British received 942 M4A1s through Lend-Lease. An M4A1 of the 1st Armored Division is seen above in Tunisia in 1942. A USMC M4A1 is seen below, driving off of an LST at Cape Gloucester.
