Later versions of the Sherman would attempt to rectify the iss | U.S History

Later versions of the Sherman would attempt to rectify the issue with larger hatches for the driver and assistant driver and an extra hatch in the turret. Initial production examples were built with suspension carried over from the M3. They also had a low bustle turret and the narrow M34 gun mount. The M34 mount was replaced by the wider M34A1 with a direct telescopic sight for the gunner. The M4 first saw combat in US hands, alongside the M4A1, during the landings in North Africa. They would go on to see action in Sicily, Italy and France. The 75mm armed M4 could still be seen, in decreasing numbers, right up until the end of the war in Europe. When production ended in January of 1944, a total of 6748 75mm armed M4s had been built by five manufacturers. Two Baldwin built M4s of the 1st Armored Division, 13th Tank Battalion are seen above offloading from LST-77 at Anzio in 1944.
