UPDATE: A Marine Corps aircraft crashed Wednesday in the Southern California desert and civilian and military emergency crews were responding, but there were no immediate details about those on board, the military said. Five people were on board the MV-22B Osprey when it crashed in a remote area near the town of Glamis in Imperial County.

Naval Air Facility El Centro confirmed the aircraft was assigned to 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and had crashed approximately 40 miles away around Coachella Canal Road and State Road 78 near Glamis, Calif. The base also dispelled earlier reports that the aircraft was carrying “nuclear material.” According to first responders to via Imperial County Law Enforcement and Fire radio traffic, responders said at least four people were dead and a fifth person was unaccounted for.

The Osprey is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and is assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
