Educational objective: Alcoholic cerebellar degeneration is caused by damage to the Purkinje cells of the cerebellar vermis. Manifestations typically include the slowly progressive onset of ambulation difficulties, including wide-based gait and postural instability. Truncal coordination (eg, tandem gait) is impaired, but limb coordination (eg, finger-nose test) is relatively intact.
