2022-06-02 23:30:47 For while Russia was defeated in its offensives to capture Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa, Moscow has succeeded in capturing Mariupol, the Sea of Azov and the "land bridge" it sought from Russia to Crimea—and appears to be moving toward dominance of the entire Donbas.

Ukraine is also blockaded by Russian warships from exporting its wheat and corn, upon which a number of developing nations depend to feed their populations and avert malnutrition and even famine.

And with Russia making slow but steady gains in the Donbas, Putin does not appear to be holding a weak hand in any negotiations.

With the Ukrainians and Russians exchanging artillery fire in the Donbas, Zelenskyy asked the U.S. for its High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS.

With strike capabilities of almost 50 miles, this could put Russia itself in range. But U.S. officials say they have assurances from Ukrainian leaders that HIMARS will not be used against Russian territory.

The Kremlin has warned that any nation sending advanced weapons to Ukraine will face harsh repercussions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has charged the West with declaring "total war" on Russia.

What this suggests is that the war is now generating greater risks and dangers for the U.S. than any additional rewards we might realize from "weakening" Russia with further fighting.

It may be time to tell Zelenskyy not only what we will and will not provide but what we believe are the acceptable terms for a truce.

How to justify what will no doubt be an immense bill presented to California taxpayers next year?

Like Einstein said, compound interest. You see, if black person X hadn’t been unfairly deprived of some sum of money way back when, due to what Einstein probably didn’t call “compound interest, the Eighth Wonder of the World,” today it would be worth a gazillion dollars to their heirs. (After all, whoever heard of African Americans spending their money on themselves and not leaving it to their heirs?) For example, if in 1851, some black person was unfairly deprived of something worth $100,000 today, and that $100,000 had compounded at 3% real (above inflation) for the 171 years since, today it would be worth to his heirs $15,673,000. If you go all the way back to 1619, as the California document frequently does rhetorically, the sum owed for depriving one black of $100,000 in 1619 is $14,907,388,035.

That $14,907,388,035 is rightfully theirs, and somebody (i.e., you) is going to pay! Open / Comment

2022-06-02 18:28:48 So yes: a typical response from government law-enforcement agents, whose primary concern is staying safe long enough to draw their gold-plated pensions. It's hard to see how private citizens, whose primary concern is the safety of their loved ones, could do any worse of a job. That's the beating heart of citizens' rights, including Second Amendment rights, right there.

Government sucks. Everything they do sucks, and everything they tell you is a lie. Arm yourselves, citizens!
