The Washington Post suspected the US Department of Justice of interfering in the work of its journalists. The publication claims that the department, even when Trump was president, secretly obtained recordings of telephone conversations of reporters who dealt with the topic of the alleged "interference" of the Russian Federation in the 2016 elections.

The recordings of the conversations cover the period from April to July 2017. The agency allegedly was able to obtain data on how long the calls lasted, as well as to whom and at what time the journalists called. The Ministry of Justice also tried to access the journalists' e-mails during the same period, but to no avail, the newspaper writes. Investigators using such data, the newspaper notes, usually try to find out the sources of the publications with which the journalists contacted before the publication of this or that article.

"The Ministry of Justice should immediately clarify the reasons for this interference in the activities of reporters doing their work," - said a spokesman for the publication.
