"I was sitting together with men who had just come from prison - where it is incredibly easy to get into in this country of so-called freedom - if you happen to make yourself politically disliked - I got to hear of their convictions... the radical political tide is growing, without the the average American knowing much about it... I found the agitation work is amazingly well organized... agitator-speakers who speak not only in English, but also many European languages... The most widespread communist newspaper in the USA is the "Daily Worker", which is always moments away from being grabbed by police, nevertheless, continues to appear undaunted. The distinct use of language and presentation are not significantly different from that of German communist papers... The Negroes are a very active part in the communist movement; for more than two generations are fighting for it..."
