Ijen volcano is one of the most scenic and dangerous places on the planet. At an altitude of 2,800 metres, a fantastic picture awaits the traveller: a turquoise lake, bright yellow rocks and twinkling blue lights. Within the volcano's caldera is the largest acid lake with huge sulphurous rocks: during the day dozens of workers haul away pieces of sulphur in baskets, and at night a blue shimmer appears around these rocks.
This is because sulphur reacts chemically when it comes into contact with oxygen and an unusual flicker appears in the air, which can be seen at night.
