Then vs Now

We will be exploring the history of mastering and vinyl at Abbey Road, using rare photos given to us directly by Abbey Road Studios

Our first photo is of one of the many inventions by Alan Blumlein, the electronics engineer from EMI who pioneered explorations in the creation of stereo sound, sound recording, and many telecommunications devices.
This photo, courtesy of EMI Archive Trust, is of the first of Blumlein’s inventions in the 1930s – the moving coil cutting lathe, designed to replace Western Electric Corporation’s older model.
This was done at the request of EMI’s management, as previously a significant royalty was paid to Western Electric for each record released.
