Then vs Now
We will be exploring the history of mastering and vinyl at Abbey Road, using rare photos given to us directly by Abbey Road Studios.

For the 3rd part of our photo series exploring the history of mastering and vinyl at Abbey Road Studios, we have this image of Ken Scott in one of Abbey Road's cuttings rooms circa 1965.

In the 1960s, an important part of training to become a recording engineer was first doing your time as a cutting engineer. This started out in the mastering department, where you would learn the limitations of the types of sounds that you could cut to vinyl.
The reasoning for this was that a recording engineer should first have to learn what works in terms of cutting the final product, vinyl, before graduating to the recording stage of the process and dealing with the comparatively easier-to-use medium of tape.
