Important message

Dear Webster students,

This email is to notify all students that on Monday, February 1, Webster University in Tashkent is enacting a strict mask mandate. This means that starting Monday, all students are required to wear medical masks, covering the mouth and nose, at all times while indoors on campus. A student’s failure to comply will result in their removal from campus for the rest of the day. The student will be required to attend any classes scheduled that day via Zoom. WUT staff and faculty are instructed to escort any student who is seen not wearing a mask off-campus.

WUT administrators understand that the mask mandate might be confusing, given that in Tashkent, almost all businesses are operating as usual. However, we want to emphasize that WUT does not have the same situation as a restaurant or even a movie theater. We have a high concentration of people at all hours of the day, our population interacts with each other frequently and daily, and we are forced to have close contact with each other. This is incredibly different from a café, theater, or gym.

To make matters graver, many of our staff and faculty are at risk of serious consequences if they fall ill. For these reasons, we need everyone to take simple steps to ensure the safety of others, which includes wearing a mask.

It is our honest hope that we can continue to organize events, have lectures on campus, permit the operation of student clubs, and keep all the other features that enrich university life. To ensure this, we depend on you, students, to keep your masks on, and thereby keep yourselves and others safe.

On a happier note, I hope you have a good weekend in the sunshine. Responsible outdoor activities, such as a walk, will do us all well in the next few days.
Sincerely,

Maggie Dankert
Deputy Director
