Acute appendicitis :
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions that requires emergency operations.
Clinical presentation provides important diagnostic clues.
The classic clinical picture of acute appendicitis begins with anorexia, followed by:
Vague periumbilical "crampy" pain that hours later becomes sharp, severe, constant, and localized to the right lower abdominal quadrant.
Localized tenderness, guarding, and rebound found in the right lower quadrant.
Modest fever and leukocytosis in the 10,000–15,000 range, with neutrophilia and immature forms.
Emergency appendectomy is the indicated treatment.
Doubtful presentations that could be acute appendicitis include those that do not have all the classic findings described above. CT scan has become the standard diagnostic modality for those cases.
