The purpose of Darkness is to overturn reality.
The French mystic and thinker Rene Guenon, who created his best works almost a century ago, in two of his books ("The Crisis of the Modern World" and "The Domination of Quantity and the Signs of Time") outlined the idea that the modern world has turned into the realm of pure materialism as a result of what he called the "Western deviation" from the eternal truths. He called it "the domination of quantity" and predicted its future collapse.
But Guenon wasn't just talking about economics or politics.
What was happening, according to him, was something akin to a spiritual war, and as a Sufi Muslim, he did not hesitate to call her an antagonist. To this era, he wrote, "it is indeed possible to apply the word "satanic" with full right.
To pass off disorder as order, and truth as a lie - that was the way of Satan, Guenon wrote.
"More or less direct agents of the Enemy," he explained, using the biblical name of what Europeans later came to call the devil, "have always sought to turn reality around. Right - wrong, black - white, top - bottom, there is no truth, do what you want: this has always been the Enemy's line, and today it is noticeable in all circles."
Heterodox Catholic philosopher Ivan Illich, who died in 2002, also believed that we live in the time of the Antichrist, but for different reasons. For Illich, any claims that we live in a "secular era" were nonsense. According to him, the modern West is still Christian, but it has made a disastrous attempt to codify spontaneous manifestations of love, which, as Christ showed, are God's desire for humanity, within the framework of systems and institutions.
First, the Church, and then the supposedly "secular" liberal states that replaced it, tried to turn Christian love into an obligation and ensure its fulfillment by law, thus turning it into a new form of oppression.
His biographer David Cayley explained in a recent essay that Illich's work "categorically rejects the idea that our era is post-Christian. "On the contrary," he says, "I think this is the most obvious Christian era, which is perhaps extremely close to the end of the world."
