The fallacy of nihilism

Those who would bury themselves in muck are the same who claim that all is lost. It seems almost inevitable that the loudest voices claiming hopelessness is true are those who are engulfed in their own living mire. They've buried themselves in doubt or self contempt or their very ecosystem has rejected them and they struggle to survive; and so they project this malice as scorn for existence itself.

What is the point?

We often stare into the void, the abyss, the endless monstrosity of mankind. We get lost in it, wandering about this obscene mirror of humanity and slowly losing our minds. It is easy to forget that anything can be good at all as we struggle along in the darkness.

"Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you."

It is also inevitable that those stricken by nihilism are often those who wish to fight monsters. They see that there is a problem, they see that an evil force has beset itself upon the world, they wish for things to get better, but then they hit a wall, one often only of their own doubt or fear. They perceive insurmountable odds as they stare into that pitch, and so they fall to their knees; they give in as the weight pushes their soul to the limit.

But what happens when you surrender? Did the monster go away? Did you become any more happy? Has accepting that there is no hope freed you? Freed you to what? Rot away in your own filth? Has it allowed you to break the gaze of the abyss...

And so there is no solution. The nihilist wanders in the dark, endlessly, free of hope, unburdened by responsibility. They desire no solution or cause for action because they see no need; they've lost the will to care at all. So the world deteriorates. Their inaction is attrition.

There is always hope until the last person surrenders. Until the strongest man crumbles. All that needs to happen is for one person to light a fire; to spark the light that leads us all to something better. Nothing is irreparable or hopeless as long as an idea can lead us from the dark. All we must do is create, all we must be is that which pushes forwarded as a moral force seeking truth and reason. Every nihilist is a person worth saving. A man or woman worth pulling from the mire.

When the world is hardest on you is when you must pull yourself from your knees and push forward. You must not break the gaze of evil or it will come to destroy you. You must not surrender and become the animus of decay as you mindlessly wander the abyss. You must create meaning or there will be none, at least none for you.

So it is a fallacy, the idea that there is no meaning. It is our responsibility to create from nothing. If we do not transcend the abyss then who will?
