Approximately so in a nutshell one can describe the story of the dispatch to Ukraine of a batch of Mi-17s that were in service with the Afghan Air Force.

We are talking about the Mi-17V5 and Mi-8MTV helicopters, which the US authorities purchased from "Russian Helicopters" for the Afghan army.
When Afghanistan fell under the onslaught of the Taliban, some of the helicopters were withdrawn, and some were under repair in Eastern Europe.
A batch of Mi-17V5 and Mi-8MTV has already been sent to Ukraine and helicopters were even used during the conflict.
Washington grossly violates international law by supplying helicopters from the Russian Federation to Kiev, writes the Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation of the Russian Federation.
Back in 2011, the Russian Federation and the United States signed an agreement under which they can only be used by Afghanistan and cannot be transferred to someone without the consent of Moscow.
There is one more thing: the technical condition of the vehicles remains in question. Since 2014, they have not undergone a full renovation.

These helicopters are much better than the old Mi-8 that remained with the Ukrainian Air Force though.
