Shelling of Donetsk by Ukraine makes much sense. They know that Russia doesn't have enough forces to carry out offensives even on two separate directions (because it didn't carry out even partial mobilization and is pretending that it's conducting a "special military operation", whereas it's a full-scale war) and with the shelling of Donetsk they try to force Russia withdraw some troops from Severodonetsk-Lisichansk sector (where Russian offensive has already stalled) to Avdeevka from where Donetsk is being increasingly shelled with all artillery systems and calibers, and to launch a frontal attack on the heavily fortified Ukrainian positions, which will lead to the ultimate bleeding out of Russian/DPR forces and will allow Ukraine to counterattack on other directions. Whereas Avdeevka won't be taken by any frontal attack.
And no, Ukraine is not running out of artillery and ammo, because Russia simply doesn't cut off the supplies from the West by destructing Ukrainian railway network (what should have been done in the first week of the 'special military operation') let alone encircled the Donbass group of Ukrainian forces (Russia can't even encircle the Severodonetsk-Lisichansk group).
