Nasrallah's speech marking the 15th anniversary of the "Divine Victory" on Israel - what's bothering Nasrallah?
Tonight, Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, gave a long interesting speech that lasted for about an hour and a half, addressing several issues in the following order:
1. The Second Lebanon War of 2006 and its achievements.
2. The recent events on the border with Israel.
3. The arrest of Hezbollah operatives by the Druze residents of Kafr Shuya.
4. The explosion in the port of Beirut a year ago.
5. The shooting at the funeral procession of Hezbollah operatives in Khaleda.
In terms of duration, most of the speech was devoted to the last three topics. This indicates that Nasrallah is more concerned about these issues, as they are causing a lot of discomfort for Hezbollah as an organization. Nasrallah addressed three of the four incidents which I mentioned yesterday afternoon as significant friction events between Hezbollah and various groups in the Lebanese population. These incidents are presumably causing Nasrallah to toss and turn at night.
As for the first part of Nasrallah's speech, in which he addressed the organization's latest clash with Israel, Nasrallah mentioned some interesting things:
Nasrallah explained that when it comes to events such as the Israeli airstrike in Lebanon yesterday, Hezbollah has to respond quickly to strengthen its existing "equation" with Israel, created by "the resistance" after the Second Lebanon War of 2006. Nasrallah emphasized that this is not a new equation and noted that responding quickly isn't always necessary. For instance, the organization has yet to respond to the deaths of two of its operatives, Hassan Tahan and Ali Mohsen (whom Israel killed in Syria and the Lebanese border), adding that this response could take some time.
As for the recent firing of rockets at Israel, Nasrallah insisted that the organization's response was measured, explaining that they chose to fire at a specific area in "Har Dov" where there are no farmers or civilians (that might be harmed from the attack). Nasrallah also noted that Hezbollah fired during broad daylight, as opposed to Israel. According to him, Israel decided to attack during the night to intimidate civilians, women, and children from the villages in the area. Hezbollah is not like that, as they take the civilian population into consideration.
Nasrallah goes on to explain that since "Har Dov" was chosen as the target for the attack, for the reasons explained earlier, geographically it was necessary to fire the rockets from an area near the Druze village of Kafr Shuya (and not from a different place, possibly closer to a Shiite village). Nasrallah added that the residents of Kafr Shuya weren't in any danger because of the shooting since Hezbollah's operatives fired the rockets from an open uninhabited area.
Nasrallah also revealed that there were eight operatives in total responsible for firing rockets at Israel and that the "criminals" from Kfar Shuya only apprehended 4 of them. The rest were smuggled out of the area by other residents of the village, who opposed assaulting the operatives.
As for those responsible for assaulting the members of "the resistance" in Kafr Shuya, and those responsible for firing at the funeral procession in Khaleda, Nasrallah hinted that "justice will be served". He stressed several times throughout his speech that he views these incidents very seriously.
As a master in the art of persuasion and a critically acclaimed rhetorician, in his speech, Nasrallah managed to defend Hezbollah's actions in the best way possible. Still, the mere fact that Nasrallah is on the defense, to begin with, makes it as clear as day that the organization is with its back to the wall in recent days in the Lebanese internal arena.
