And yet another interesting and novel situation in Lebanon.

To this day, Hezbollah hasn't claimed official responsibility when firing at Israel, so it could always have the option of claiming that "Palestinian factions" are the ones responsible.

Today Hezbollah officially announced that its men carried out the rocket attack on Israel.

Today, at 14:30, the Lebanese army officially announced that it had arrested the four people responsible for firing the rockets at Israel, confiscating the MLRS used during the attack.

In other words, from combining the two official announcements, it's clear that the Lebanese army has arrested the Hezbollah operatives who fired at Israel.

The Lebanese government is committed to UN Resolution 1701, and Najib Mikati, who has the mandate to form a government, repeated this today.

The Lebanese government is therefore committed to pursuing legal action against the Hezbollah operatives whom it arrested (according to its official statement, and according to photos of the operatives after their arrest). There is an international diplomatic catch here.

Israel needs to pressure the UN in demanding transparency regarding the Lebanese government's handling of the Hezbollah members that were arrested. Israel needs to make sure that they won't be released quietly through the back door. The official announcements made by Hezbollah and the Lebanese government are significant on the legal and diplomatic levels. Open / Comment

2021-08-06 16:40:19 Note the increase in the number of incidents in the last couple of weeks between Hezbollah and other Lebanese groups and sects:

1. The shooting at the funeral precession of a Hezbollah operative in Khaleda.
2. Demonstrations against Hezbollah on August 4th at the first anniversary of the explosion in the port of Beirut.
3. Demonstrations in front of Hezbollah headquarters in the Dahiya district in Beirut following the seizure of smuggled fuel oil which was later sold on the black market.
4. The residents of Kafr Shuya assaulting Hezbollah operatives who fired rockets at Israel.

Civilian elements are actively and publicly acting against Hezbollah without fear of consequences. Lebanese people from different sects and groups don't see Hezbollah as the "protector of Lebanon". A real opposition like this from inside Lebanon is limiting the organization's freedom of action and power. Open / Comment
