Some of you might recognise this synthesiser, the Prophet 5, from many pop videos in the 1980s, including A-Ha's
Take On Me. It was a workhorse throughout that decade, one of the first affordable polyphonic analogue synths. Many pop and rock bands used it, as well as soundtrack musicians. For example, the 1987 version of the
Doctor Who theme was entirely made using a Prophet 5. John Carpenter also used it in in his iconic 80s soundtracks.
Its inventor, Dave Smith, has died.
Having mastered the world of analogue, he later ventured into the digital realm, inventing vector synthesis as well as MIDI, the system by which computers, synths, sequencers, drum machines and other devices can communicate, making all sorts of coordination possible for the first time.
Dave Smith was a genuine innovator, and he created devices that helped to define the sound of several decades.
RIP Dave Smith, 1950-2022.
