2021-10-06 12:10:11 CONTEXT
The COVID-19 pandemic has kept a majority of children indoors for the last 18 months. With schools closed and little to no outdoor activity, paediatricians are seeing a worrying trend of children reporting symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, rise in obesity and lack of social skills.
Psychiatrists pointed out that there was a definite increase in addiction to gadgets among children. Staying at home had impacted interpersonal skills and communication of children.

HOW IT IS AFFECTING
According to Maslow’s infamous list of basic needs, humans are inherently social creatures and find it difficult to develop to their full potential without interacting with one other. Especially during one’s childhood, social lives take on a higher significance in their development.
Lack of social interaction is creating a domino effect on children across the world.
This isolation is not only creating a deterioration in social skills, but also, when children are asked these days about how they feel, the most common answers received are ‘bored’ and ‘lonely’.
There is a disruption in the child’s cognitive and emotional stability which could in turn create a harmful effect on the child’s mental health. This further contributes to the lack of overall development in the child.

WHAT COULD BE DONE
It is important for educational institutions to not only focus on textbook learning via online classes, but also make it their duty to incorporate other skills in the curriculum, especially the ones being missed out on at the moment.
Tools like Zoom, Padlet, etc. are great platforms to encourage collaborative learning where children can come together as a community to engage, learn and create.
Attempt to connect with others in your home daily through family activities. Attempt to connect with others outside of your home through virtual means such as FaceTime, group chats, and positive social media outlets
Providing them with virtual options to engage in social interactions, while being mindful of other elements like ensuring healthy conversation and maintaining cyber security, is essential.
It is important to not only look into the classes a child attends, but also cater to the child’s social needs in order for them to develop in a holistic manner.

2021-10-05 13:07:24 Context of the news
Sudeen behaviour changes, insomnia, withdrawal from social contacts, academic failure, and extreme anger and irritability has been visible in teenagers.
The amount of time spent playing online games is seen to have positive correlation with depressive symptoms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified gaming disorder as a mental health condition.

Should all people who engage in gaming be concerned about developing gaming disorder?

Studies suggest that gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who engage in digital- or video-gaming activities. However, people who partake in gaming should be alert to the amount of time they spend on gaming activities, particularly when it is to the exclusion of other daily activities, as well as to any changes in their physical or psychological health and social functioning that could be attributed to their pattern of gaming behaviour.
The DSM-5 notes that gaming must cause "significant impairment or distress" in several aspects of a person's life.
This proposed condition is limited to gaming and does not include problems with general use of the internet, online gambling, or use of social media or smartphones. The proposed symptoms of internet gaming disorder include:
• Preoccupation with gaming
• Withdrawal symptoms when gaming is taken away or not possible (sadness, anxiety, irritability)
• Tolerance, the need to spend more time gaming to satisfy the urge
• Inability to reduce playing, unsuccessful attempts to quit gaming
• Giving up other activities, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities due to gaming
• Continuing to game despite problems
• Deceiving family members or others about the amount of time spent on gaming
• The use of gaming to relieve negative moods, such as guilt or hopelessness
• Risk, having jeopardized or lost a job or relationship due to gaming

What are the available solutions ?

Cognitive behavioural therapy
is a type of therapy designed to help people understand and change unhealthy ways of thinking and behaving, according the American Psychological Association.
Cognitive behavioural therapy focuses on changing the automatic negative thoughts that can contribute to and worsen emotional difficulties, depression, and anxiety. These spontaneous negative thoughts have a detrimental influence on mood.

Through CBT, these thoughts are identified, challenged, and replaced with more objective, realistic thoughts.
CBT for Gaming Disorders could be done in three phases
• The first phase focuses on education and setting therapy goals.
• The second phase introduces therapeutic interventions to work on functional internet use.
• The final phase builds on the other two to ensure remission (abstinence from the problem behaviour) and includes relapse prevention techniques.

Parents and caregivers should also communicate with their wards and help them engage with offline activities. “Recognising the signs of addiction, psychological distress or behavioural changes in their children, parents should motivate the users to seek help or meet a doctor to know behavioural methods to manage risky situations
