So, the summit of Putin and Biden in Geneva at the Villa La Grange is getting closer.
Why was Geneva chosen as the meeting place?
Obviously not because the best Swiss rose garden is located on the territory of the villa.
In fact, Geneva was chosen for the same reason that explains why there are so many “Geneva” conventions in international law.
First, Geneva is one of the capitals of world diplomacy.
At first there was the headquarters of the League of Nations, which later became the European headquarters of the United Nations.
A lot of organizations belonging to the UN system are located in Geneva, including the International Labor Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, and the International Intellectual Property Organization.
Secondly, Switzerland is a permanently neutral state, which, to the best of its strength and capabilities, tries not to quarrel with anyone and not to join any organizations and alliances (even the UN barely agreed to officially enter already in 2002).
Switzerland is not a member of NATO (but cooperates with it, of course).
Switzerland is not a member of the European Union (but it is a member of the Eurozone).
Since 2014, Switzerland has been minimally involved in Western sanctions against Russia.
