The Rubber Hand Illusion

The Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) is a tantalizing illusion, where the feeling that a rubber hand belongs to one's body (feeling of ownership) is brought about by stroking a visible rubber hand synchronously to the participant's own occluded hand.

In the first work describing this phenomenon, Botvinick and Cohen [1] showed that two types of measures are affected. Participants rated the subjective experience to own the rubber hand high in a questionnaire if stroking was synchronous but not if stroking was asynchronous. In a second experiment, perceived position of the participant's left index finger was measured by an inter-manual reaching task in darkness. A displacement of reaches towards the rubber hand occurred in the case of synchronous stimulation, but not in the case of asynchronous stimulation. This displacement effect has been referred to as proprioceptive drift.

What You Gonna Do if You See This?

Actually it's just a pit of water, yet it doesn't look so. What would you've done there if you drive full speed?

Face on Mars

In 1976 the Viking Orbiter radioed back many images from Mars. Among those form the Cydonia region, one depicted a rock formation that strongly resembled a human or humanoid face staring straight up into the heavens.

You can probably guess what was made of this… ‘Pareidolia’ is the term for neurological or psychological phenomena where vague images are interpreted by the brain as specific images. Statistically speaking, it is a type I error, a “false positive”.

FYI: the second image is 100% the same area on the Mars, however under a different angle. Not so human anymore, huh?

Owls Among Us!

This photo was taken in a Moscow subway. Are the owls starting to take over the planet?

The Delboeuf Illusion (cont'd)

Remember the previous post about the circles? Well today is a real life hack.

In a cafeteria, choose a smaller plate! You'll feel more full in a shorter time, because your brain will tell you that you ate more, than you actually did.

And if you are the cafeteria owner, you know what to do, don't you? ;)

The Delboeuf Illusion

Above you see two blue disks, and two black circles. One circle is a little larger than the blue disks, the other much larger. You may notice that one of the blue disks is also larger than the other one.

But what... This effect is moderately strong but fully illusory. Both of the blue disks are 100% same.

As Coren et al. (1976) put it “(This) is some sort of cognitive contrast effect, where in general the apparent difference in the size of the central test element and adjacent or surrounding elements is accentuated.” Helmholtz referred to it as “size contrast.” These illusory effects depend upon cognitive information processing strategies. Into the same class belongs the Ebbinghaus-Titchener illusion (as Coren et al. show with a factor analytical approach), but not size illusions which relate to depth perception / perspective.

DoИt 8rEak Y0ur eYe$

I swear this image nearly made me go crazy. You've seen variations of this many times here, but this one is the most mind breaking imo.

How do you feel after watching it?
