Another way to reveal the mystery image is to blur your view (screwing up your eyes) or moving away from the screen (thus using your eye optics’ low pass to reduce grating contrast).

In the adjacent animation you see two pairs of concentric ring arrays. The blue one moves a little, and the superposition of the blue rings with the green background rings creates curved dark bands. These are known as “moirés” (French).

The two patterns are superimposed, so light has to pass both patters (or be blocked, as the case may be). This involves a multiplication of the two transmittance values, and multiplication of patterns with similar spatial frequencies causes difference frequencies to appear.

If you look around in the figure above you will notice the appearance and disappearance of black dots at the crossings, annoyingly at places where you’re not looking.

This figure looks similar to the famous Hermann Grid, however reportedly is causing different types of illusionary effects.

When there are many squares, an oblique light cross, like a large ‘X’, appears. This cross does not really exist.

In the animated image there are a number of superimposed squares, which become lighter the smaller they are. When there are only a few, one can clearly see that the non-occluded area of each square has constant brightness throughout. When their number increases, there is a seeming lightening at the edges, forming the ‘X’.

The pyramid illusion (also called the Vasarely illusion) is a striking perceptual effect related to all phenomena involving lateral inhibition. The effect occurs when concentric squares of decreasing size and luminance are stacked on top of another.

Salar de Uyuni lake in Bolivia is the largest dried-up salt lake in the world. With it, you can make beautiful shootings without having to worry to edit the videos or pictures afterwards. It naturally looks like surreal as if you were walking on the sky.
