TON is over. :-(

Telegram CEO announces the end of Telegram Open Network and Gram following regulatory battle.

Here is the full text of Pavel Durov's message:

For the last 2,5 years some of our best engineers have been working on a next-generation blockchain platform called TON and a cryptocurrency we were going to name Gram. TON was designed to share the principles of decentralization pioneered by Bitcoin and Ethereum, but to be vastly superior to them in speed and scalability.

...

I am writing this post to officially announce that Telegram’s active involvement with TON is over. You may see — or may have already seen — sites using my name or the Telegram brand or the “TON” abbreviation to promote their projects. Don’t trust them with your money or data. No present or past member of our team is involved with any of these projects. While networks based on the technology we built for TON may appear, we won’t have any affiliation with them and are unlikely to ever support them in any way. So be careful, and don’t let anyone mislead you.

Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet. The movie.

“Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet” is filmmaker Torsten Hoffmann’s follow up to his award-winning 2015 documentary “Bitcoin: The End of Money As We Know It.”

His first film looked at the history (and failings) of money and the financial system, and how Bitcoin was poised to revolutionize and solve many of its problems. Now, Cryptopia brings us up to date with the current state of play in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Blockchain has significant use-cases for 5G

Jiang Wei, the chairman of China Telecom Blockchain and Digital Economy Joint Laboratory, explained in an interview published on Chinese news portal, Cebnet, that blockchain technology has significant use cases that could improve the 5G mobile network.

Wei stated that Blockchain in 5G will introduce social capital in the 5G landscape. He believes that this will help the industry crowdsource the 5G infrastructure. He also noted his belief that blockchain will help realize 5G resource sharing and usage tracking.

China Telecom is also experimenting with blockchain to improve international roaming services. He sees Blockchain as a way to eliminate the need for third-parties. If he’s correct, this could make related services more seamless and convenient.

Zoom acquires Keybase encription startup to fix privacy and security

Video conferencing app Zoom, the undisputed titan in an era of social distancing, has acquired end-to-end encryption start-up Keybase.

The acquisition, announced May 7, follows multiple privacy and security-related scandals — including the rise of video conference gatecrashing (“zoombombing”), controversial data sharing with Facebook, false claims that video calls were encrypted, and revelations that nefarious actors were peddling half a million Zoom accounts on the darknet.

Under the terms of the new deal, Keybase will become a subsidiary of Zoom and its team will lead security engineering work to develop an end-to-end encryption feature available for paying customers.

TON OS by Telegram to go open source on GitHub tomorrow

The project’s core infrastructure developers, TON Labs, are planning to open source the main components of the TON OS on GitHub tomorrow. Mitya Goroshevsky, CTO at TON Labs, confirmed the news on May 6.

“This means the freedom of the user to copy, distribute, learn, modify and improve the TON software, and most importantly, in the case of TON, this means absolute freedom of the network operation. This is not a question of how good the code is, but a human right to use it.”

Bitcoin in Space

Blockstream has just upgraded their satellite network that carries the Bitcoin blockchain for the first time in almost two years. The data rate is now 25 times faster and users can sync an entire node without connecting to the web.

“Instead of requiring users to connect their Bitcoin full node to the internet for the initial sync — as was the case with 1.0 — Blockstream Satellite 2.0 now enables full history synchronization! Blockstream Satellite users can hook up a Bitcoin full node and fully download the entirety of the Bitcoin blockchain, from the original 2009 genesis block right up to today’s latest transactions…absolutely no internet required!”

New season of ‘Billions’ opens with Bitcoin mining topic

The new season, based on the life of the former New York District attorney Preet Bharara, began on May 3 with a plot revolving around a group of cryptocurrency miners operating an illegal Bitcoin farm.

Chuck Rhoades, the attorney general of New York in the drama series, questioned the leader of the illegal bitcoin mining farm after dismantling the organization.

Chuck asked him the following:
“So your multitude of computers and servers could solve some abstract math equations resulting in the mining of Bitcoin? It’s worth millions right now, whoopee! But it’s backed by what? Nada.”

The miner answered with another question:
“What’s the Dollar backed by since we went off the gold standard?”

Coinbase: Bitcoin is superior to Gold

A report published by leading U.S.-based crypto exchange, Coinbase, has argued that Bitcoin (BTC) offers a distinct advantage over gold. They state that Bitcoin is afforded these advantages by its lack of dependence on physical supply chains.

“Bitcoin’s rate of new supply is ~3.6% per year and will soon drop to ~1.7% on May 12th, setting it on par with gold’s historic scarcity. As gold miners and refineries have gone offline, Bitcoin’s global mining ecosystem seems resilient according to hash rate measurements in recent days.”
