Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

It is true that there is a growing trend towards urban migration among young people, which means elderly people are left behind in the countryside. Even though this development can be seen in a positive light, I posit that it is an undesirable outcome.

Initially, such a trend can benefit both generations. The most obvious upside to young people is that they can enjoy a better life. Once in a city, these people have better job prospects, access to a wider range of facilities and most importantly, more chances to grow through new experiences. These opportunities, however, are hardly present in the countryside. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, senior villagers are not necessarily at a disadvantage when young people abandon them. As a matter of fact, it gives old people a break from their children in the sense that elderly people do no longer have to care for their young ones. Most old people expect to be free of responsibilities once they retire, but it is barely the case when children are still around.

Having said that, drawbacks stemming from youth migration to cities are more profound. The immediate concern here is a shortage of labor to do farm work, which is compound by the fact that it often requires physical strength. Without the help of young people, not only will there be fewer people to grow food, but also this job will become overwhelming to rather old rural dwellers. Eventually, this situation will lead to setbacks in food supply, most certainly affecting life in cities. Last but not least, challenges of being old amplify without the support of the youth. These difficulties often range from materials needs to loneliness, which can be increasingly difficult to cope with in the absence of young caregivers.

In conclusion, despite the possible benefits of city migration among young citizens, I lean to the idea that it is, for the most part, a rather undesirable turn of events for the reasons stated above.

2022-06-21 10:34:20 The pictures show the current layout of Norbiton's industrial area and how it will look after development in the future.

Generally speaking, the place is expected to be turned from a principally industrial zone into a residential one, featuring many new facilities. It is also apparent that the road infrastructure of the area will be greatly enhanced. Despite these alterations, few parts of the town are set to be left intact.

Today, the Norbiton industrial area has a roundabout in the center connected to the main road from its south. To the west and north of the roundabout, there are three factories, placed in a semi-circle, and five more factories along and at the end of the road that runs from the east of the roundabout. We can also see farmland just across the river.

In the future, however, the area is expected to undergo a complete transformation. The factories along and at the end of the road on the east will be demolished to erect residential areas, a school and a new playground. The factories that semi-encircled the central roundabout are also set to be knocked down to build three more housing complexes and shops. In addition, a brand-new medical center is planned to be built to the south-east of the roundabout, while the farmland area will be moved slightly to the east to make way for one more residential complex and a road-bridge leading to it.

Overall, even though the island is now a rather featureless, uninhabited area, it will have been converted into a full-fledged resort beach within the set timeframe. It is also worth mentioning that the place will be readily accessible with the addition of a pier.

Focusing on the key changes, a pier will be built in the south of the island, which will serve as the only point of entrance. There will be a path from the pier that will lead to the resort reception. Island villas are planned to be positioned immediately to the east of the reception, but there will be no paths leading to them. Two more paths will branch out from the reception, one of which will connect it with a new restaurant in the northmost tip of the island and the other a set of beach villas in the west. Finally, the beach at the west end of the island will be made into a swimming area. Most of these changes will require removal of some vegetation on the island.

Little over 50 people showed up for the test and that meant each had less than 20% chance of getting in. To put it into perspective, that's three times less than one's chances of getting into a private school in the US.

But it isn't all bad news. For those still wanting to join our summer program, we got you covered. We will be launching another intake as early as mid-July with similar requirements and offers. So, stay tuned.
