Aḥmad b. Abū al-Aḥwārī reported that Ḥafṣ b. Ġiyāth said: “If you suspect (the truthfulness of) al-rāwī (ie: a narrator), question him about the two ages: that is his own and the age of the one who they are reporting from.”

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ حَفْصَ بْنَ غِيَاثٍ، يَقُولُ: " إِذَا اتَّهَمْتُمُ الشَّيْخَ فَحَاسِبُوهُ بِالسِّنِينَ، يَعْنِي: احْسِبُوا سِنَّهُ وَسَنَّ مَنْ كَتَبَ عَنْهُ "
