Julian Melchiorri, an engineer, has created an artificial biological leaf that uses chlorophyll photosynthesis to produce oxygen.
Silk proteins and chloroplasts (a kind of organelle found in plant cells and eukaryotic algae) make up the artificial leaves, which absorb CO2 and create oxygen, chemicals, and carbohydrates that may be utilized as an energy source.
Plants cannot grow in the absence of gravity, which poses serious challenges for the supply of oxygen in space.
