Saudi Arabia plans to spend $100–$200 billion to create a desert utopia with no automobiles, no streets, and zero net carbon emissions. "The Line," a 106-mile-long band of hyperconnected villages running from the highlands of northwest Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, was announced this month by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. But, unlike today's polluting metropolises, this 1 million-person city will be fueled by "100% clean energy," with people transported via "autonomous mobility solutions" and ultra-high-speed transportation. According to Bin Salman, the design would protect 95 percent of the region's natural ecology. According to developers, the Line would create 380,000 new employment and increase Saudi Arabia's GDP by $48 billion.
