"Genericide" is the term used for when a brand name is slowly turned into the general name of the product it sells.. like how all powdered juices are now called 'Jolly Juice'.. words like 'escalator', 'thermos', 'videotape', 'kerosene', 'zipper' once were brand names of products made by specific companies but were then used by the general public as names for all similar products then they no longer referred to the specific product alone. Matter of fact, the phenomenon is so common that according to the video I based this on, there are laws around the world that state that if a name is widespread enough and is being used by the general public to refer to the product in general rather than the brand, it can no longer be trademarked by the company that came up with the name in the first place! The name can even then be inducted in dictionaries as just another word, completely forgetting the brand name!
On a more local context, idk if similar laws exist here in Ethiopia but imagine RIDE being forced to change it's name because too many people are using 'RIDE' as a shorthand for any meter taxi service u can call for remotely.. So it's not a distinctly Ethiopian or African thing to have words like 'Colgate' for toothpaste, 'OMO' for powdered detergent and so on (you can add some here)..
Next time your ወግ አጥባቂ friend insists you call it የላስቲክ ውሃ and not የሃይላንድ ውሃ, send her this.

I wonder how humans first came up with cooking.. cavemen sitting around and this one person stands up and goes
"Hear me out, how about we take the food we had worked so hard hunting and gathering and put it into this fire which is probably the most destructive force we know?"
