What will happen to the Milky Way in the future?
Unfortunately, our home galaxy won’t last forever. We are currently moving towards our neighbor galaxy, Andromeda, at a speed of 400,000 km/h. In about 4 billion years Milky Way will crash into it. Scientists always predicted Andromeda to devour our galaxy, since Andromeda is more massive. However, recent calculations showed that Andromeda’s size is equal to about 800 billion suns, which is close to our galaxy’s size. Accordingly, it is not yet clear which galaxy will stay after the collision.
