One of the materials for the radiation shield would be water, but it can’t be used as a primary structure for the spacecraft. Another is polyethylene: it is fairly cheap to produce, but it’s not strong enough to build a large structure.
There are BNNTs — tiny nanotubes made of carbon, boron, and nitrogen, with hydrogen — flexible enough to be used as a structure for the spacesuits and spacecraft.
Scientists are also investigating an opportunity to create so-called force fields, bubbles protecting space habitats or spacecrafts from radiation as Earth’s magnetic field does.
