174 years difference

On the left is a drawing by Lord Ross in 1845, the first image of the Whirlpool Galaxy at the time. He sketched the galaxy while looking through his Leviathan telescope, which was considered the largest until the beginning of the 20th century!

On the right is a photo of the Spitzer telescope taken in 2019. Just how powerful the Ross telescope was at the time

What are the plutoids?

Shortly after Pluto was "demoted" from planets to dwarf planets, the International Astronomical Union decided to create a new category of transneptunian objects.

From now on, all dwarf planets orbiting the Sun on an orbit with a radius greater than the orbital radius of Neptune were classified as plutoids. At first, as many as two celestial bodies - Pluto itself and Eris - were honored to become plutoids. A bit later they were joined by Makemake and Haumea. Quaoar, Sedna, some other objects are candidates for plutoids

Lonestar intends to transfer all of humanity's knowledge to the moon

The startup Lonestar aims to become a telecommunications pioneer in space, and the first test of a lunar data center is scheduled for next year.

Lonestar plans to create a network of secure servers in lava tubes and transfer there the essential information about humanity in case there is a global catastrophe on Earth

Is the speed of light really that fast?

A beam of light makes 7.5 revolutions per second around the Earth. Seems fast, let's zoom in.

It already takes 1.255 seconds to get to the Moon for this procedure. It took 3 minutes for the beam of light to travel from Earth to Mars.

Conclusion: the speed of light is not that fast, especially on the scale of the Universe

Fire in Space

On July 18, 2014, astronaut Reid Wiseman managed to produce a jellyfish-like fire sphere in an experiment. The results of his experiments could lead to better engines on Earth .

Moon Dust

In 1972, Jack Schmitt and Gene Cernan got so caught up in being the last humans on the Moon that they forgot to "wipe their feet" before entering their landing module. Which, in general, is rather surprising as they already knew how awful that lunar dust was.

It had already managed to clog all the articulations of their spacesuits during the mission. So much so that they couldn't move properly. And the dust was so sharp that it rubbed through three layers of Kevlar-like fabric on their boots!

Such negligence brought this very lunar dust inside their ship, and they had to fly all the way home with it. Constantly making sure it didn't kill them.
